AMD FSR3 (AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3) has been released. Currently, only two games are compatible with it: Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum.
What is the Performance of AMD FSR3?
In November 2022, AMD introduced their latest upscaling technology, AMD FSR3, to rival Nvidia’s DLSS 3. This technology combines AMD’s Fluid Motion Video frame generation technology with FSR upscaling. It was scheduled to be released in 2023.
Although there were rumors that Bethesda’s Starfield would support FSR3, it turned out to be inaccurate. Starfield supports DLSS instead.
AMD FSR3 introduces frame generation and a new “Native AA” quality mode. It utilizes an enhanced version of AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) optical flow technology to generate frames for a smoother gaming experience.
According to AMD’s data, Forspoken sees a significant increase in performance when using FSR3. For example, on the Radeon RX 7900 XTX running at 4K with Ultra High settings, the FPS jumps from 58 (FSR3 off) to 201 (FSR3 Performance Mode + Frame generation). Similar performance boosts are observed with other GPUs.
To address the latency introduced by image generation, FSR3 includes its own latency reduction technology that works with all GPUs but requires game support. Additionally, when supported, latency can be further reduced with Anti-Lag+ technology.
AMD has also announced that 12 more games will receive FSR3 support, including Cyberpunk 2077, Eve Online, Frostpunk 2, Space Marine 2, Black Myth Wukong, Crimson Desert, and others. However, no timeline has been provided for when these games will receive the FSR3 update. It’s worth noting that Cyberpunk 2077 recently received support for DLSS 3.5 with a recent patch.
FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 is compatible with AMD Radeon RX 5000 series, RX 6000 series, and RX 7000 series graphics cards. It is also supported by Nvidia GPUs in the RTX 20 series, 30 series, and 40 series.
