Blizzard Hints at the Future of World of Warcraft at Blizzcon

2 min

After almost 20 years since its original launch, World of Warcraft continues to thrive. With recent releases like WoW Wrath of the Lich King Classic and Dragonflight’s new content patches, Guardians of the Dream and Fury Incarnate, Activision Blizzard’s groundbreaking MMORPG offers plenty of enjoyment. However, what lies ahead for the future? Is it time for a complete overhaul and a fresh start with World of Warcraft 2? Alternatively, could a new WoW expansion be the answer? With so much potential remaining in World of Warcraft, Blizzard is teasing a major announcement for the future of WoW, as well as Diablo, Overwatch, and more at Blizzcon 2023.

There are two perspectives when it comes to the future of World of Warcraft. Some believe it is necessary to completely revamp and redesign the MMORPG, introducing a mythical World of Warcraft 2 that overhauls Azeroth and adds an entirely new world. On the other hand, others argue that WoW can continue to grow by adding expansions and implementing smaller improvements over time, without abandoning the existing game.

Regardless of which viewpoint one holds, it appears that Blizzard has news to share at this year’s Blizzcon. The company promises to provide details about WoW, Diablo, Overwatch, and Warcraft Rumble, hinting at something new coming in November.

“This year, the goal is to make BlizzCon feel more experiential than ever before,” says Blizzard. “Whether you’re immersed in Azeroth, exploring the mysteries of Sanctuary’s dark cathedral, playing alongside the heroes of Overwatch, or tuning in from home, we want you to feel like you’re entering universes alongside your friends. Join us as we celebrate and experience what we’re building next for our games, and hear from developers all across Blizzard about their vision for our games, their craft, and more.”

“What we’re building next.” The pessimist or realist in me wants to say that this doesn’t necessarily mean anything groundbreaking and we might only receive details about a new patch for Dragonflight.

However, the optimist within me dreams bigger. We’re only a year away from World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary. Wouldn’t this be the perfect time to reveal something significant, set to release in 2024? We’ve discussed in the past how World of Warcraft 2 could be the key to ensuring the continued success of WoW. Perhaps the time has come.

While we eagerly await Blizzcon and all the potential announcements, remember to check out some of the best WoW addons to keep Azeroth feeling fresh and new in 2023. Additionally, the comprehensive WoW Dragonflight tier list will assist you in finding the best classes for both PvE and PvP.
