When we talk about research in Pokemon Go, there are two ways to understand it. Field Research Tasks are randomly selected quests whose quests and rewards change depending on the month, season, and current events. Completing these can lead to research breakthroughs, which provide further unique rewards that also change over time. Special Research, on the other hand, are preset story-based mission series that are handed out by Professor Willow from time to time.

This is how Pokemon Go Field Research missions and their rewards work

Field research missions are essentially little mini-quests given to you by the game as you spin Pokestops, and sometimes randomly every now and then. Each PokeStop is assigned a specific field research mission each day, and although you can complete a quest more than once per day, you will only ever pick up the same mission from a specific PokeStop. Rewards vary by quest and are listed below.

You can complete as many or as few field research quests as you like, but you should aim to complete at least one mission per day to work towards your research breakthrough. Quests span all aspects of Pokemon Go and exist in some capacity to get players to experience all aspects of the game. Field Research quests may ask you to fight in a raid, fight in a gym, hatch Pokemon eggs, catch specific types of Pokemon, or even rotate Pokestops – and these are just a few examples.

Sometimes a quest will reward you with the items, but sometimes you’ll be rewarded with a rare Pokémon encounter – Field Research quests are the only way to meet and catch Spinda, for example. These encounters are also very useful because Pokémon encountered in this way cannot escape.

The quests and rewards offered mostly rotate monthly, meaning that after a month, Niantic will retire quests and rewards and replace them with new ones. Here are the current quests & rewards:

Breakthroughs and stamps in field research explained

As you can see on the Field Mission screen in Pokemon Go, there are a number of stamps, ranging up to seven stamps. You can only earn one stamp per day, even if you complete multiple missions – so essentially this series of stamps is designed to last a week. When you reach the seventh stamped day, turn one Research breakthrough free, represented on screen by Professor Willow’s large wrapped package.

What exactly will be included in these packs varies from month to month, along with the other research bonuses and rewards, including the possibility of a Sinnoh or Unova Stone evolution item being dropped. Additionally, this “Research Breakthrough” features a Pokémon encounter each month. You also have unlimited attempts to catch them, as Pokémon encountered this way cannot run away. As long as you have patience and Pokeballs, you can keep trying until they are caught.

This is also a great place to practice making excellent throws and curveball throws in Pokemon Go. Pokémon caught this way also have naturally high stats – the same stats you might find on Pokémon encountered during Raid Battles. All in all, this is a great way to catch rare Pokemon.

The reward in August 2021 is an encounter with Chimecho. In addition to the Pokémon encounter, each Research Breakthrough earns you Stardust, XP, and a few random other items, including a chance at a Sinnoh Stone or Unova Stone evolution item. Since there is a Shiny variant, every August Research Breakthrough has a chance of also being a Shiny Chimecho.
