Why Can't I Fast Travel?

Why Can’t I Fast Travel?

Are you encountering a fast travel unavailable error in Starfield? There are multiple reasons why this issue may arise in the game. This guide will explain each of them and provide solutions to address the problem of “Fast Travel Is Currently Unavailable…” and its variations.

Overencumbered: Starfield Can’t Fast Travel On Foot

This is a straightforward reason – you’re carrying too much stuff. Consume items to reduce your weight and get rid of low-value items. If you have a UC Battlemeal Multipack, consuming it allows you to carry eight additional Mass for eight minutes. If you’re near your ship, you can remotely access the Cargo Hold without being onboard. Access your Inventory, select your ship, choose the Cargo Hold, then access Inventory again from that screen, and start transferring items.

Ship Docking Status

If your ship is currently docked with another ship or a StarStation, you need to sit in the cockpit and manually undock before you can fast travel.

Ship Overencumbered: Starfield Can’t Grav Jump Fast Travel

Your ship itself can also be overencumbered, preventing you from making Grav Jumps. Both your Cargo Hold and Captain’s Locker have a maximum Mass limit. If you have nothing disposable, you can take items out of the Cargo Hold and drop them on the floor of your ship. Items on the ship’s decks are persistent, do not count towards the encumbrance restriction, and won’t be lost.

Can’t Fast Travel To Escape Combat

Fast travel is disabled if you are in combat, near enemies, or taking damage from mines or environmental hazards. You need to create distance between yourself and the source of the threat to enable fast travel. In space combat, you can escape a losing battle by fast traveling to a destination outside of the current Star System.

“Fast Travel Is Currently Unavailable From This Location”

Some locations, such as caves, mines, and enemy bases, do not allow fast travel. Even if you eliminate all enemies, you need to reach an exit before fast travel becomes available again.

Quest or Mission Status Related

Various story progression factors can prevent fast travel. At the beginning of the game, you can’t fast travel until after meeting Sarah Morgan through the mission “Old Neighborhood”. While infiltrating the Crimson Fleet’s capital ship on behalf of the UC, you cannot fast travel out of that scenario.

Aurora In Your Possession On Neon: Starfield Fast Travel Unavailable

Fast Travel may be unavailable in Starfield due to having aurora in your possession.

If you have any Aurora in your inventory, you cannot fast travel off the planet because it is a banned substance in all Settled Systems. You have to leave Neon on foot and reach your ship. Once off-planet, Aurora becomes Contraband and will be subject to ship scans when you Grav Jump to locations in Settled Systems.

Contraband Aboard: Starfield Fast Travel Smuggling

If you have any Contraband in your Inventory or on your ship, you cannot fast travel directly to a location on a planet in a Settled System. The icons will be grayed out because you must first pass through a Settled Systems ship scan, which occurs when you Grav Jump to the system itself. Your options are to sell the Contraband to a vendor or jettison it via your Cargo Hold. Dropping the items on the deck of your ship is not an option.

Fast Travel Unavailable: Starfield Game Bugs

There are several game-breaking bugs related to fast travel. You can try resolving them by manually saving, restarting the game, and loading the save. If that doesn’t work, attempt to use your Star Map to fast travel to a different Star System. Earth might be the only location available in some cases. This can potentially reset the fast travel bug.
